Thread was eradicated on Pern three generations ago. The dragonriders, for a long time, was relieved at the responsibility lifted off of their shoulders. Clutches began to become smaller as slowly the dragons' hormones realized that the thread was non-coming. The Weyrs flourished easily, as did all of Pern, as they slowly clawed their way out of traditional ways. New technology was founded by the help of AVIAS, and the dragonriders became the "police" force of Pern. Things settled down and a new lifestyle for holds and Weyrs alike were adopted.
Now, one goldrider of Fort Weyr thought this life was just...annoying. They were taking something from a culture that was only vaguely known from a million or so year old piece of machinery. She was miffed at everyone's sudden acceptance of it; or most of them, anyways. She was the Jr. Jr. Weyrwoman of Fort, if there was such a title; the Sr. Weyrwoman was ill, and they all knew that the next goldrider was in line. That left her out on a limb, with nothing really to do. She was restless and wanted to do something. And the old Pern she read about was where she wanted to be. Her peers knew her plan to jump back in time, so they kept an eye on her and her gold at all times. She got very annoyed by it all and decided to leave Fort.
She wasn't quiet about it; she asked any rider she came by if they wanted to leave. If they asked where, she'd tell them to meet her later outside the weyr. Quite a bit came; three bronze riders, three brownriders, four blueriders and four greenriders. She told them all that she was planning on going to Earth, using the images that AVIAS provided them from a satellite feed that was updated every day. They were quite surprised really, and all of them were glad for the adventure and agreed to go. Nothing else was going on in Pern, so why not?
They made the jump that night.
~Meanwhile on Earth~
Things had really gone downhill. After all of their unnending pollution without realizing their consequences, Earth had started to fight back. A major epidemic coursed through Earth with a ferocity unknown to them. Of course, it whiped out all other illnesses- cancer, AIDS, HIV, etc.- but it was a devastating curse that left its victim dead once it passed on. Some people were untouched by it; for some reason they weren't touched. But by the time the disease had done its course and disappeared as quickly as it appeared, more than six eigths of the world's population had died.
It left an almost barren Earth, shelled out of its core and quite shaken. They slowly realized that, through the madening haze of the disease (which they promptly called Ending X) their cities, roads, everything had been destroyed. Nature seemed to have striken back with a vegenance, tearing up tar and disinigrating it into dust, blasting through the scyscrapers, the factories, and smashing down cars into tiny microscopic pieces. Some buildings withstood the secretive onslaught that they all failed to notice. Earth was barren and quite easily, scary.
The people that had survived also realized that they were now not the conquering species. New creatures lurked in the shadows and shook them to the core. Some were nice, others...not so much. Fighting for survival, the survivors- a good ten thousand people- came together. They decided to split into four groups. One group stayed in the Americas, in the US; one in Europe, another in Asia; and the last in a huge (and we mean HUGE) island nestled in between Europe and North America. This group happened to be the smallest, but they were determined and found that the island rivaled Australia. So they made their stay there.
The other groups chose their way of life and fought for survival with the creatures. Some they found were actually quite nice, extremely intelligent, and were willing to help them. Others growled, snarled, and visciously attacked when approached. They soon found out the difference from them. The four groups kept in touch, at least four times a year, at the beginning of each season.
~And then, two became one~
On the island with the fourth group, one girl stood at the edge of the coast. She had lost everything, but had gained quite a lot. She loved the island and everyone who went with her- yes, she was the one who had pointed it out, and they all followed her lead. Though she was not the leader of the group (she was too young) she was respected by the others. Well, as she stood on that coast she caught quite the cold blast of air. It was summer, so she had to think to herself, What the hell. She looked up to see an astonishing sight before her eyes; a whole group of dragons, looking quite astonished themselves, hanging suspended in the air with colorful outstretched wings.
She yelled out to them and caught their attention; they landed in the large area that they were given. One of three women of the group, who rode the only gold (the other two rode green) approached her and asked her where they were. She told them that they were standing on the remains of Earth, and in turn asked where they were from. Pern was the answer, and she was shocked into silence; then the leader of the group came over and conversed with her.
After talking for quite a long time, it was established that the dragons would stay on the huge island (continent?) with the others. They weren't to be revealed until after the gold dragon flew, which she was close to doing, and hopefully until after the resulting clutch hatched and the dragonets impressed. She refused to go back to Pern, wanting to learn about Earth before going back and not taking the chance of loosing them all in another long trip like that. So they were all there to stay, for a while.
Another thing that was decided was that if the clutch DID result in a queen egg, the queen would impress and the rider would remain on earth with whomever wanted to stay. Two weyrs would be formed on the island, each on other end; Bendort weyr for the Queen and her rider, along with the fellow Pernese. And Accrendo Weyr for the Earthlings and the new gold weyrling (if there was one), named after the island, Accrendo Crest Island.
Time would tell what happened.
